2022 Healthcare Workforce Initiative Report

We are proud to share the latest 2022 report from the Healthcare Workforce Initiative (HWI), as well as the first report issued back in 2019.
The Healthcare Association of Hawaii (HAH) started formal work on this initiative in 2018 as a result of the HAH Strategic Plan, where it was identified as an industry priority, and as a result of a sector partnership collaboration with the University of Hawai‘i and the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii.
The first industry survey of healthcare jobs in Hawaii was issued in September 2019. You can still access that report by clicking here. The 2022 report was delayed by the pandemic but is now available at the link below.
We thank all of our HAH members, our government, community, and education partners for their support of this important initiative.
We know that healthcare is a rewarding field that offers gainful employment across more than 200 different professions. Our collaborations will continue, and our hope is to strengthen the pipeline of workers needed to meet our state’s needs.

with 30+ open positions represent a total increase of 1,508 positions or a net increase of 80% from 2019.
The professions with 30+ open positions represent 87% of all open positions surveyed for the 2022 HWI report.

2019 Healthcare Workforce Initiative Report
We are proud to share the first report from the Healthcare Workforce Initiative (HWI). The Healthcare Association of Hawaii (HAH) started formal work on this initiative in 2018 as a result of the HAH Strategic Plan, where it was identified as an industry priority, and as a result of a sector partnership collaboration with the University of Hawai‘i and the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii.
This is a big challenge because of the period of sustained low unemployment we are experiencing. Employers across all industry segments are competing for workers. We believe that healthcare is a rewarding field that offers gainful employment across more than 200 different professions.
We are collaborating more closely with our schools and post-secondary educational institutions across the state to better align their programs, certificates, and degrees with the needs of healthcare providers across the continuum of care.
This report highlights the work that has been done over the past year, and how these efforts are already yielding promising results. Having sufficient workers with the right skills across multiple healthcare professions is a challenge that will remain with us for a long time to come.
